Kid-friendly Hikes Near Downtown LA

Just because you are away from home doesn’t mean you have to miss out on exercise. Grab your family and enjoy the fresh air on one of the many kid-friendly hiking trails near LA.

Ernest E. Debs Regional Park

A 300-acre park in LA is just what you and your children need to shake the dust off and get moving. Even if your little one is in a stroller, you don’t have to miss out on a nature hike. Ernest E. Debs Regional Park offers paved trails that are well maintained, and you might even spot some LA wildlife while you explore. You will also reach new heights on your hike where you will have an excellent view of DTLA.

Franklin Canyon Park

Step into the wilderness without ever leaving the city. Grasslands, woodlands, and a three-acre lake are all part of Franklin Canyon Park. Some of the best kid-friendly hiking trails near LA are in this park. Five miles of walking and hiking trails are offered for most ability levels. The Discovery Trail is easy, relatively short, and mostly flat. The Hastain Trail is a moderately strenuous hike that offers excellent views of the lower canyon. The Berman Trail is a heartier hike through the Santa Monica mountains. When you’re finished hiking, you can take the kids to the Sooky Goldman Nature Center to learn more about the flora and fauna they just saw.

Griffith Park

You have undoubtedly heard of Griffith Park. The famous observatory and merry-go-round have been seen in countless films and television shows. While you are exploring LA, Griffith Park is a must-see. What you may not know about Griffith Park is that it has some of the best trails in the city. The Charlie Turner Trail is a long-time favorite, both for visitors and native Angelenos. Weekends get crowded, so you may prefer to take the family hiking on a weekday or choose a less popular trail. The Fern Canyon Trail is arguably the easiest option and is also the quietest.

Eaton Canyon Nature Center

If you genuinely want to feel like you’re in another world, head to the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. Located on the outskirts of LA at the base of the San Gabriel mountains, Eaton Canyon Nature Center is ideal for the whole family. The nature center offers guided family walks every Saturday morning. A docent will show you the wonders of the area on this walk that is suitable for even very young children. For self-guided walks, travel the Junior Nature Trail, which is an easy-walking, flat course with signage so you’ll always know your way.
